At
the time of his death in August 1968, my father was working on this book.
The manuscript and a typescript from it made by his devoted friend and
student Corinne Andreen Marshall, lay untouched for many years. In 2003, a very
small number of copies of his uncompleted book was privately
published by our family in the form shown here, primarily for
former colleagues and students, as well as for the libraries of some
relevant institutions, some of which he had been associated with.
It
is published here in full for the benefit of students, musicians, music
lovers, historians and others. A number of typos and similar
corrections were made in June 2022.
